Enable and use the CSS developer console
Enable and use the CSS developer console. Version-specific steps, checks, rollback, and upstream sources for Source 1.
Use Counter-Strike: Source’s built-in developer console for observation and documented commands. Enabling the console does not require enabling cheats, and an “unknown command” result is evidence that the instruction does not match the running build.
Before you change anything
- A legitimate Steam installation or dedicated-server installation for Counter-Strike: Source.
- A backup of every file that will be changed.
- Access to the local client console or the dedicated-server console, as appropriate.
Version-specific procedure
- Enable the developer console through the game’s own settings when that option is available.
- If a launch option is required, verify its spelling against the Source 1 command-line reference before adding it.
- Open the console at the menu and run only a read-only command such as a help or command-list query.
- Copy exact output, including the unknown-command or permission message, into the diagnostic record.
- Remove temporary launch options after the diagnostic session.
Verify the result
- The console opens without enabling sv_cheats.
- The captured output includes the command and the engine response.
Rollback
- Disable the console setting or remove the temporary launch option if it is no longer wanted.
Common pitfalls
- Do not paste command packs from another Counter-Strike version.
