Back up personal configuration first, then use Steam’s official integrity check for Counter-Strike: Source. Verification repairs files managed by Steam; it does not prove that a third-party config, plugin, driver, or network path is healthy.
Before you change anything
- A legitimate Steam installation or dedicated-server installation for Counter-Strike: Source.
- A backup of every file that will be changed.
- Access to the local client console or the dedicated-server console, as appropriate.
Version-specific procedure
- Close Counter-Strike: Source and stop any dedicated server using the same files.
- Copy personal configs and custom content from the cstrike installation to a dated backup outside the Steam library.
- Run Steam’s Verify integrity of game files action from the game’s Installed Files properties.
- Let Steam finish downloads before restoring anything from the backup.
- Launch once with stock files; restore personal files one at a time only after the stock launch succeeds.
Verify the result
- Steam completes verification without a pending download.
- A stock launch reaches the menu before custom files are restored.
- The original backup remains outside the Steam-managed directory.
Rollback
- Restore only the backed-up personal files that are confirmed compatible; re-run verification if a restored file recreates the fault.
Common pitfalls
- Steam may legitimately replace locally modified stock files; verification is not a backup mechanism.
